Nick Fury was a soldier during World War II. During his time in combat, he was gravely injured. Treated by French doctor Professor Berthold Sternberg, Fury was not only treated for his injuries but also was injected with the "Infinity Formula", a formula intended to slow human aging. It was a success.

Fury returned to America a war hero. He was invited to join S.H.I.E.L.D. and eventually ascended to the position of Director. During his tenure as Director, Magneto rose to power and the Mutant-Human War began. Fury, forced to defend humankind against Magneto and his mutant army, failed. He wasn't fired but resigned and in reality blackmailed to train the Red Guard. He was killed by two of his trainees Earshot and Wolverine who was suspected but without proof he wasn't arrested. S.H.I.E.L.D. covered up the incident so nobody heard of his death and so many people thought that he was still hiding and aveding detection.

Recently, there have been rumors of Fury's return as the leader of the Human Resistance, but it was revealed that it was Mystique who organized the incidents to get Wolverine back to his old self.
